Bacteria That Fight Cancer
What is it?
Scientists have long looked for less invasive ways to fight cancer tumors. Recently, they have engineered bacteria that can be injected into the body, find tumors, and deliver medicine right to them! The bacteria find tumors by sensing their low-oxygen, acidic environment. Once inside, they multiply until they burst open and release the medicine exactly where it's needed.
3 Things to Know
Bacteria are drawn to the low-oxygen conditions inside solid tumors, so this approach could work for many different cancers rather than just one specific type.
These bacteria can trigger the immune system to look out for future cancerous tumors.
Clinical trials are happening right now to test whether this works safely in people.
Fun Fact
This field of work is called synthetic biology!
Current research
How will we make sure the bacteria won't mutate or spread where they shouldn’t?
